Watkins Incorporated's Rich History

Watkins Incorporated was founded in 1868 by Joseph Ray Watkins, known by friends, relatives and business associates as J.R. Watkins. Mr. Watkins first manufacturing plant was the small kitchen of his home in Plainview, Minnesota. He was so confident in his first product, called "Dr. Ward's Liniment," that he offered customers his now-famous "Trail Mark" bottle and the marketing world's first-ever money back guarantee.

Creator of the Money Back Guarantee

I'm certain that when Mr. Watkins founded the "money back guarantee" marketing method he didn't dream that 140 years later tens of thousands of firms around the world would be using the money back guarantee to help sell their products. J.R. Watkins was definitely a marketing genius that one could label as "far ahead of his time."

Watkins Move to Winona, Minnesota

By 1885 the production of Liniment had outgrown J.R. Watkins home in the town of Plainview, so he moved the company to the booming lumber town of Winona, Minnesota, which boasted five railroads and was a very important port on the Mississippi River. Winona, Minnesota had numerous lumber mills and hundreds of lumber camps.

At its peak, Winona, Minnesota's population grew to 20,000 residents. A large percentage of the population was made up of lumberjacks. The lumberjacks worked very long days, using their muscles and frequently going to bed at night with sore and cramping muscles. There couldn't have been a more perfect location in the U.S. to sell Watkins red liniment.

Expansion of the Watkins Products Line

Once settled in Winona, Watkins incorporated his company as the J. R. Watkins Medical Company. The company expanded its product line to include products such as Petro-Carbo Salve, Cathartic Pills, Vanilla, Black Pepper, and Cinnamon.

J.R. Watkins - Founder of the Direct Sales Industry

J.R. Watkins was the first U.S. entrepreneur to ever hire products salesmen that would travel from door-to-door, or home-to-home, to sell directly to consumers. Hence, he is also known as the founder of the direct sales industry, an industry that is now made up of hundreds of companies around the world, selling thousands of consumer products and racking up billions of dollars in sales annually.

Watkins Goes International

During the 1890’s Watkins opened branches around the country, beginning with San Francisco, California. In 1913 the company opened its first international branch in Winnipeg, Canada, and by the 1940s the company had more than 135 branch offices in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and England. Today, Watkins continues to operate internationally, with products sold in the US, Canada and China.

Still Family Owned and Operated

Since its beginnings, Watkins has been family owned and operated. J. R. Watkins’ descendents—Watkins and Kings—guided the company through its first 110 years. In 1978 Irwin L. Jacobs purchased Watkins, and the Jacobs family continues the Watkins’ tradition of manufacturing the highest quality products and providing outstanding service that exceeds expectations.

Modern Day Watkins

Watkins Home-Baesd Business Opportunity

Watkins number one product remains its home-based business opportunity. Watkins products are sold through Independent Watkins Associates (like myself) in the U.S. It's independent sales force in Canada use the title Independent Watkins Consultants. There are approximately 50,000 independent Watkins Associates and Consultants operating home-based Watkins products businesses throughout North America (i.e., the U.S. and Canada). This equates to about one Watkins Associate or Consultant per 6,800 people. Thus, as you can see, the Watkins business opportunity is still considered "wide-open" -- far from being considered a saturated marketplace. No Longer a Door-to-Door Company

Watkins is no longer considered the "door-to-door" sales company that it became so famous for during the 1900's. Today's Watkins associate has many modern and innovative ways and methods to market Watkins products. Each Watkins associate is given a free WatkinsOnline.com website to accept orders online. Thus, e-commerce sales make up a huge portion of Watkins total annual sales.

Watkins GoodTastings Events

Perhaps the most successful method of marketing Watkins products in the 21st century is what Watkins calls Good Tastings parties, what I characterize as a "light meal and party atmosphere" event that Independent Associates or Consultants hold in the home of a volunteer host or hostess. The host or hostess earns free Watkins products for hosting the party at his or her house, based on a percentage of total sales made at the event. Countless Watkins associates make several hundred to several thousand dollars per month using GoodTastings parties as their primary, and often times, only method for marketing Watkins products.

More Ways to Market Watkins Products

Other great methods one can use to sell Watkins products are: Online marketing and e-commerce sales (the method I use most), selling Watkins products at festivals, trade shows and other events that attract the public, product catalog distribution, sales to non-profit organizations, fundraisers, direct sales to people you know through work, family, relatives, friends, church, school and sports, setting up retail accounts (retailers and shop owners are limited to selling 20 of the 350 products that Watkins manufactures) and many more creative methods of marketing that Watkins Associates in the U.S. and Watkins Consultants in Canada have perfected over the years.
